A Legacy of Public Service

Inspired by the example of her grandmother, Melissa understood the value of service to her family and community at an early age. While her desire for community service was cultivated in her native Jamaica, her passion for community activism was nurtured here in America.

Melissa discovered the value of her voice as a change agent when she became the first Black editor of the Judson College newspaper. After graduating, she was able to blend her skills in managing processes with her intention of pursuing an impactful purpose through her work with the American Cancer Society.
Melissa’s ongoing commitment to selfless public service is reflected in the three core values that serve as her personal mission statement:

  • To intentionally focus her purpose on impacting lives
  • To be an active catalyst for transforming communities
To promote the value of diversity as a means to advance global understanding

It has been through this commitment to purpose that Melissa has advanced her service to Lauderhill from her earliest days as a Board Member of the Lauderhill Chamber of Commerce, to her turn as Vice Mayor and her current role as a proud Commissioner for the city that she calls home, Lauderhill.
